They make your health happy!
So is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? Botanists classify tomatoes as a fruit because they develop from the ovary of flowering plants and contain seeds. Regardless of what category they’re in, tomatoes are delicious and unarguably nutritious.
Carbs
Tomatoes are low in calories and low in carbs. There are 3.5 carbs in a small tomato. The glycemic load of tomatoes is estimated to be 2 when you consume one serving.Â
Fat
They contain a very small amount of fat; less than one gram per serving.
Protein
There is close to 1 gram of protein in a small tomato.
Vitamins and Antioxidants
Vitamin packed tomatoes contain vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K, and potassium. They also contain Lycopene – an antioxidant that has been shown to reduce prostate cancer, increase HDL (healthy cholesterol) and reduce LDL (bad cholesterol).Â
The Big Question: should tomatoes be refrigerated?
Contrary to popular belief, do not store fresh tomatoes in the refrigerator, in fact, this can turn the flesh mealy and reduce the flavor. Instead, store in a cool, dry place.
